Company-Project:
SAR vision - EOSAT 4 Sustainable Amazon
Description:
The use and results of the unique SarSentry deforestation and forest degradation system will be demonstrated for two ESA projects with lively animations. While existing monitoring systems, both optical and radar based, focus on deforestation, the unique SarSentry system is able to detect and quantify near real time forest degradation as well. As forest degradation is an indicator of current and future deforestation, this not only allows rapid intervention at sites where illegal activities are detected, but it also provides valuable information on the impact of supply chains of businesses related to environmental, biodiversity and carbon impact. Therefore, SarSentry can easily be integrated with other existing applications and provide support to certification, REDD and offsetting initiatives that support the objectives of the SDG’s.
SarSentry is implemented in Colombia in collaboration with 14 local stakeholders, to support the SDG’s. Different radar-based products are supporting the implementation of indicators for forest cover change, climate change and sustainable development at a local level.
SarSentry is currently also implemented in Pará Brazil. The provincial government SEMAS will integrate the system with their own monitoring related applications related to the detection of illegal activities, forest operations and agricultural land use in the Amazon Forest. Their goal is to make monitoring more efficient and faster (rapid response), and to increase revenues because of increased fiscalization and offering new monitoring services to land owners.
In both countries SarSentry is expected to support REDD+ programs, in the near future.
