Description :
Ocean roughness is a characteristic that affects all Earth Observation measurements in one way or another. For some systems ocean roughness defines the fundamental measurement we are interested in and for others it's a bit of a nuisance to be mitigated using appropriate algorithms and data processing. But when we view the ocean from space, the surface roughness characteristics must be considered.
This Agora Deep Dive is designed to discuss the current state of our knowledge of ocean surface roughness from different perspectives: active radar, optical radiometry (visible to thermal and longwave infrared), microwave radiometry and surface roughness modelling.
The Agora will consider the fundamental challenges necessary to accurately simulate ocean surface roughness elements to enable better retrievals of geophysical parameters from space in the next decade.
