Description :
At the last ESA Ministerial Council meeting (Space19+) in November 2019, it was decided to launch a programmatic pillar " space safety and security“" dedicated to preventing, mitigating and responding to civil security threats in order to support the development of resilient societies.
This new sector is dedicated to use space technology for concrete applications in the domain of safety and security (such as food control, maritime security, disaster management, border security, hazards and migration). EO and the fusion with other data sets by using AI, ML, social open source intelligence, can make a key contribution to cover the whole cycle of security needs and capabilities, as already proven by national and EU programmes.
The proposed workshop session could give to the ESA LPS an overview on how EO data contribute today to the various security use cases. But most importantly the workshop could focus on how to better use the EO technology and services in the future, by engaging a discussion on additional user needs, on difficulties user might have when using the EO technology and how to overcome them and on the last industrial technological developments.
Within this Agora session, the following questions could be addressed:
1. Presentation of use cases coming from different projects where industrial players are involved (ESA EOLaw, EU EMS, EU SEA,....) : to present the status of technology and service capacity of EO data for the various security segments.
2. Discussion on the current use of EO services, with different user groups - short presentation and round table discussion with the following users:
3. How to improve use of EO data in the future, what are the gaps and challenge and the new leading edge technologies?
• New service requirements for EO only, or synergies and integration between EO, Navigation and Communication will be more and more needed ?
• Planning of future needs: how do public users define the requirements ?
